April 9, 7:30 pm: The Execution of Stepan Razin, by Dmitri Shostakovich, with the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, Northern Kentucky University. Pleasing the party in power was good not only for business, but for one’s health in the USSR under Joseph Stalin. After Stalin’s death in 1953, composer Dimitri Shostakovich could write music without fear of reprisal and denunciation. In the spirit of artistic freedom, the evening will include a “dunk the dictator” tank on the Greaves Concert Hall commons during intermission and a post concert vodka tasting/meet and greet. On the program is Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 and then in collaboration with the Northern Kentucky Community Chorus and the Voices of the Commonwealth, we present The Execution of Stepan Razin, a cantata for bass, chorus and orchestra featuring Kenneth Shaw (bass). Greaves Concert Hall, Northern Kentucky University, Nunn Drive, Highland Heights, KY 41076. To purchase tickets, visit www.kyso.org or call 859-431-6216.
